Optimal Health Newsletter #1 - Inaugural issue
Dr. Young.s #1 recommendations in supplements and health topic books.
Since this is my only chance to write a #1 issue, I figured that I would start right out with my #1 recommendations in two areas of major importance, supplements and health related books. So here we go:
Supplements: Imagine that you are in a health food store, surrounded by thousands of bottles of every type of supplement. The selection is enormous; even if you could afford to buy one bottle of everything you could never consume it all, much less carry it all home. The ads say that each bottle is important, perhaps necessary, for optimal health. Is it true? If it is allimportant, what.s the most important? Now, also imagine that there is supplement rationing. and you can only leave the store with one bottle? Which one would it be??? My personal selection would be a trace mineral
supplement. Trace minerals are elements such as zinc, chromium, selenium, and others that, although needed in only very minute amounts, are absolutely vital to good health. In many cases they are required by enzyme systems throughout the body as .cofactors. and are critically necessary for these enzymes to function efficiently. I consider these trace minerals to be the most significant items that are missing from our diet. There are a number of reasons for this. In some situations, years of intensive agriculture have removed these items from the soil, and they are not replaced by conventional agricultural methods. In addition, food processing techniques often remove trace elements even if they were present in the soil where the food was grown. In any case, our bodies need these trace elements and it is vitally important that they be included in our diet. The only reliable way to do this is with nutritional supplementation. Therefore, in addition to 'vitamins', be sure to include trace minerals in your nutritional supplement program.
Books: Also, what about books? There are countless books available on virtually every aspect of health. Many of them are really good! (and some aren.t!). But, just like we can't take all the supplements, we can't read all the books. There are just too many! Besides that, some books and articles conflict directly with others. I personally have a library of several hundred books on health related matters. Do I have a single favorite? You bet I do! Here.s my #1 book recommendation. The title is 'Total Wellness' by Joseph Pizzorno ND. In my opinion everyone should have a copy of this and read it cover to cover (several times, then read it once or twice more). Dr. Pizzorno is the founder and president of Bastyr University, an excellent naturopathic college, in Seattle Washington. He writes in a clear and understandable manner and gives both an overview and detailed look at many mechanisms of health and disease prevention. 'Total Wellness' covers just about everything that is important in achieving and maintaining good health. In a scientific yet understandable manner the book discusses topics such as the immune system, toxicity, inflammation, and rejuvenation. - (Note: Since this newsletter was originally written in 2000, the book Total Wellness has been difficult to obtain in bookstores or through Amazon.com. They seem to have recently (2005) become available again, so it is worth looking on Amazon.com or other sources such as Half.com or Ebay. Another book that I highly recommend is 'Prescription for Natural Healing' by James Balch. This is an excellent book and should be generally available in all bookstores.
So, that's it for Volume One, #1. I hope you will find these newsletters both interesting and valuable. There is just loads of interesting information out there related to optimal health. I am coming across things every day and will try to pass along material that I consider accurate, valuable, and interesting. Also, if you don't want to receive this newsletter just reply and say 'unsubscribe' or the equivalent and you will be dropped from the distribution list. If you like this newsletter, you can hit similarly hit 'forward' and send it on to others. Unless I hear from you, I'll be back again with edition #2.
Best regards,
